Choosing your wedding decor is one of the most exciting parts of a wedding. Of course, a big part of this is the flowers. Whether you opt for traditional Italian wedding flowers or something a little different, we’ve put together a quick seasonal guide to help you choose.
Seasonality of Wedding Flowers
There are many reasons why choosing seasonal flowers is better. Firstly, the longevity of blooms. Spring blossoms won’t often survive the heat of an Italian summer.
Secondly, availability of flowers out of season. Most flowers you can find all year around. However, traditional Italian wedding flowers follow the Italian seasons. It is worth considering these when arranging your florals.
Finally, overall cost. You can get more seasonal flowers for your wedding, creating large and luxurious displays if your blooms are in season.
What are the traditional Italian wedding flower seasons?
There are four Italian flower seasons.
Spring – 21st March to 20th June
In Spring, you will find plenty of options and beautiful pastel hues. Some of our favourites are sweetpeas, tulips and daffodils. For something extra special, we love when a couple incorporates cherry blossom into their traditional Italian wedding flowers.
Finally, Spring is Peony season. This romantic full bloom is an absolute favourite to add to huge luxurious displays.
Summer – 21st June to 20th September
The summer is bursting with bright colours and full blooms that are real showstoppers. Cosmos, blousy Dahlias and sunflowers represent an Italian summer. Roses are in season all year round, but some favourite large varieties traditionally bloom in the summer months.
Furthermore, if you’re looking for the smell of Italian countryside, Lavender is also available in the summer. Add it to your bouquet for a beautiful scent you can carry with you all day.
Autumn – 21st September to 20 December
In autumn, we love traditional Italian wedding flowers full of rich tones and warm hues.
Hydrangeas are perfect at this time of year as they turn towards more warm pink and antique tones. Amaryllis and delphiniums are also available to create tall displays that leave your guests in awe.
Winter – 21st December to 20th March
A winter wedding in Italy is truly unique and special. The air is fresh and cool, and the flowers represent this beautiful season perfectly. Therefore, we love pairing whites with soft blues and greens for an opulent winter look.
Anemones, forsythia and irises create beautiful traditional Italian wedding flowers in Winter.
